I got my lip pierced on the left side with a stud (16g, not sure of length) about 2 months ago. I found the piercing a lot less painfull than expected, and had no major issues within the first 2 weeks. I was a bit obsessive with cleaning and aftercare, brushing my teeth and using Oral B Alchol Free mouthwash after everything I ate. I was also frequently using a "H2Ocean" spray I bought at the piercing place. I was also avoiding any wine, beer or dairy [roducts as my piercer advised. I began to get a white bump on the inside of my mouth under the piercing around three weeks and was worried so I stopped by my piercer who said it was normal and should go away on its own. After doing some of my own research online I concluded that I was probably overcleaning my piercing and so I cut back on all my cleaning efforts and the white bump pretty much cleared up.

Now, as I've stated, it's been about 2 months and I'm having an issue with a bump again. A white bump has formed inside my mouth below the piercing (it goes up over the edge of the disk of the stud) There is only a tiny bit of swelling, if any, and harldy any pain. There is a tiny bit of whitish-yellow disgarge coming from the piercing if I move the piercing around to have a better look at the bump.

I am wondering if this is maybe caused by irritation and then fussing with the piercing too much to check on the bump and overcleaning with a salt water solution. I am also worried that this could be something more severe like an infection, I have recently started to eat dairy again.

I love my piercing so I try to take great care of it, maybe I worry too much, but I don't want any serious problems as I would like to keep my piercing.

The labret stud should be the same length as your piercing. A little bit longer is not a bad thing. However, if the labret is a tiny bit short, one or both ends will tend to sink into the supporting tissue, and will cause bruising and swelling. This effectively seals the interior of the piercing, so if you have something trapped in the piercing it will not clear.

With your lip relaxed, the ends of the jewelry should sit gently on each surface. When you push on the back with your tongue, you should be able to expose the labret shaft with little effort. Have your piercer check the length of the jewelry, and switch the shaft if necessary.

If there is something trapped in the piercing, simply changing the jewelry, or removing, cleaning and replacing, should clear it. Have your piercer do this for you. At two months, there is too much risk of your losing the piercing if you try to do it yourself.

Keep us posted.
