using a retainer

I have had my nose pierced for 6 weeks.  I have a nose screw in my piercing, but I need to change it for work soon.  Will it be OK to put in a retainer at this point?

I too have gotten the dreaded bump (a few days ago), but am leaving it alone.  I understand that it will go away at some point.  I have changed the soap that I wash my face with, since the other may have been irritating the piercing.

I do not want to lose my piercing due to work, but I also don't want to irritate it further by changing the jewelry or putting the wrong thing in.  Any advice?

At least you are allowed to insert a retainer.  We know many businesses that are not so kind.  They insist that the jewellery be completely removed.

A retainer at this point will be fine.  We have seen many that look like nostril screws but are completely made of plastic and you do not have a head piece so many employers do not have a problem with this one.

Since you have the bump, good that you are leaving it alone.  But changing it on a daily basis may irritate it further.  The soap is not the problem, its your body's natural response to the piercing.  This is why leaving it alone is important.  If the body does not perceive a stress or irritation, it will reabsorb the fibrous tissue and the bump disappears.

We would recommend that at least until the bump disappears, that you get one of these plastic nostril screws and leave it in until the bump is gone.  Then you can change back and forth as you want.

Hope we have helped.

I just wanted to thank you again.

I had to order a nostril screw retainer because none of the piercing studios in my area carried them.  I also wanted to thank you for your professionalism.  As I was going around looking for a nostril screw retainer I received all kinds of CRAZY solutions for my "bump" problem.

The worst was when a "professional" piercer told me to crush up aspirin and mix it with lemon juice and put that on the bump.  I said thanks, but no thanks.  This same place tried to convince me that clipping and burning fishing wire to size would be a safe retainer.

I wish that the US had more stringent regulations about who should consider himself a professional piercer.
I did exactly what you said, NOTHING to the piercing and the bump is now gone.

Thank you so much!

Well, apparently there is a piercing association in the US but we are not impressed as they seem to perputate the old myths and not improve their education.

We are very happy that your piercing is now healthy and that you found a nostril retainer.

Good luck and take care
