I have had my tragus piercing close to three months. For the past two weeks of have noticed a cyst developing ( at least that is what I think it is ) and was wondering if this is a sign of infection.
Once i started noticing the cyst my piercing also began to itch and feel warm (very annoying). My primary care for it is washing the piercing with dial soap once a day followed by sea salt soak. This is what the piercing parlor told me to do to care for the piercing.
Is there any solution to getting rid of the cyst, should I see a physician and get oral antibiotics. I also have been using Bactine to help with the itching, so I am not tempted to scratch it or touch it.
I got mine pierced less than a week ago and my ear was swollen out of control. I bought soft soap to clean it and i've been using neosporin to get the swelling down and the infection out. I also have been putting hydrogen peroxide on it. Once it all goes down I'm going to use everything as I feel necessary.
I'm also feeling a warm sensation and it feel as though my ear is clogged (almost like a regular ear infection) but I don't think that's the case. But nothing is hard. If it's a cyst it should feel a little on the harder side. Most likely not though - if it hurts or is a little bump it might be an infection or a bacterial development under the skin - that happened on my nose ring but eventually it went away (i cleaned it and took care of it carefully).
Anyway, I'm not an expert on piercings but... I don't think it really is a cyst so at least you won't have to worry about that.
cool thanks
oh, and one more thing about the healing.
i read in the piercing aftercare that when your piercing is dried out, you should use some kind of moisturizer or something like that but what do you do when it is filled with fluid?
my ear has also been pussing a bit and i was wondering what i could do to stop that or if i should just leave it alone again haha?
The only thing to do right now is to leave the piercing alone and not put anything at all on it. The more you do to it, the longer it will take for the bump to dissipate.
If it has fluid inside it, then you have severely irritated it.
Did you remove the spiral jewellery and put in the captive bead rings? If so, good if not, then we recommend taking the stress off the piercing by putting in the simple jewellery.
Keep in touch
yes, i changed from the spiral and put in the captive bead ring. its been...well quite a while and it still has not gone down...
i almost want to take it out but i know i would regret it...
i wish it would just heal!
How many days has it been since you changed the jewellery to a captive bead ring? Are you having any puss discharge? Are both bumps still present?
You have to realize that you have done a lot of damage to your piercing and it will take some time for the body to heal itself.
Please be patient and give us as much detail and information as possible so that we can better assist you.
its probably been about 2-3 weeks since i have changed it to the captive bead ring. there is only a bump on the front now, and puss sometimes does come out of it when i put hot water on it.
at times it seems like the bump is almost completely gone, but even at that time, the piercing still hurts.
i have been using tea tree oil every night for about a week and a half, and it is making my ear MUCH much better.
since im doing something for it at night, im not exactly sure what to do with it in the morning.
would hydrogen peroxide or anything be good to use on it?
Your piecing still hurts because you are STILL IRRITATING IT! You do NOT need to do anything to your piercing. And as long as you continue to use something, you will not heal. The body is what heals the piercing not any product that you use.
Hydrogen peroxide is a harsh product and it is used to kill everything; healthy and unhealthy tissues. This will just add further irritation and your bump will increase in size again.
PLEASE STOP DOING ANYTHING TO YOUR PIERCING!
Take their advice. They really really really know what they are talking about and have helped me get my piercing to normal.
And believe me, I had a rough beginning... and they have told me all the right things in order to get my piercing healed in the proper manner.
:)
Thanks for your kinds words.
Very happy that your piercing is healthy.
i got my tragus pierced about 3 months ago, and right now it has a bump in the front and on the back. sometimes the bump seems like it is filled with something, and sometimes it is like a scab.
i started cleaning it with saline but it didnt do anything, and then i started using tea tree oil. it made it go away a bit but as soon as i stopped using it, it came back. the bumps are really irritating and i have no idea wut to do.
please help

You do not have a cyst, you have a bump filled with fibrous tissues. You are overcleaning your piercing and using harsh products as well. This only makes the irritation more problematic and to solve your problem, you have to STOP doing all of these things to your piercing.
Salt water is harsh, Bactine is NOT recommended by the manufacturer to be used on any piercings. The warm feeling is not a good sign as you have probably irritated the skin so much that you have broken down the natural ecology of your skin and may have developed an infection.
So we do recommend seeking medical attention just to make sure that you do not have an infection. Otherwise, please just leave your piercing alone.

If your swelling problem was out of control during the first 3-4 days, then this is normal as peak swelling is on day 3 after your piercing. Some swell more than others and then there could have been another problem. Using hydrogen peroxide is not a good idea as this product kills everything, healthy and unhealthy. It damages tissues and dries them out.
The more products you use, the longer it will take for your piercing to properly heal. Aftercare is just to kickstart the body to do its job which is healing. Products do not heal, they hinder.
Just clean for about 2 weeks with the softsoap and stop using the neosporin as it no longer is doing you any benefit. After 2 weeks, allow your body to do the healing. You may notice that you will develop a bump and if this does occur, please do not clean or use harsh products on it. Its not an infection but the body trying to rid itself of an irritation.

The bumps are probably filled with fibrous tissues and can feel full and scabby depending on what has been irritating them.
You should not be cleaning, moving or doing anything to your piercing. The more you do, the longer it will be before your piercing will heal. The body is trying to rid itself of the irritation and as long as you are irritating it, that is the job it will do.
Tea tree oil is not good for any piercing. Its very harsh and will do more damage than good. Its best for riding the body of parasites (like Lice). Saline solution is just another salt water product and is harsh and drying as well.
We strongly recommend leaving the piercing alone. You will notice that you may find some discharge and crusties around the piercing. This is normal as your body is trying to get rid of the problem. Take a warm cloth and place on top of the piercing. Leave for a few minutes and then take a Q-tip and remove the crusties without moving the jewellery (do your best).
Otherwise, leave it alone and let the body heal it. You will notice that the bump will start to dissipate.
well i did what you said..i didnt touch it and i used warm water to clean it, and it healed perfectly it didnt hurt, and there was no bump at all.
since it had been about four+ months since i got it pierced, and i had just gotten some new rings for it, i decided to change it that went very well. it did not hurt at all and it went through smoothly.
my ear felt great for the first..maybe 9 days after changing it, but then the bump starting coming back.
it was small at first, but now it is big again, red again, swelling again, and hurting again, even after i have been using warm water on a cotton ball on it.
help!
For the bumps to return after 9 days, you had to have done something to irritate the piercings. Please remember, it may not have been something too dramatic as you had problems in the past. Because of this, it may have not been a good idea to change the jewellery that soon after then were healthy.
Please be patient and lets keep an eye on your progress.
haha i thought it might have been a bad idea to change the earring but i couldnt wait to do it!!!
right now i have a kinda swirly ring in and it moves around a bit...thats most likely what is irritating it and making it do this.
but since you said it wasnt a good idea to change the piercing, i dont know if i should change it again.
i have a different ring that i could put in it that is just regular and most likely would be much better for healing it but you said not to change it.
so what should i do?
Yes, that type of jewellery has a tendency of moving and though we do not like changing the jewellery when there is a problem, keeping it in may be more problematic so change it to something simple that will not move around too much.
Leave it in until all the bumps have disappeared and the tissues look 'normal'. Do not do anything for the bumps, let the body take care of them. If they do not look like they are dissipating in about 1 week, write back.
