Hello,

I'm 24 and got my belly button pierced when I was 18 at Blackstar. It healed pretty well and is obviously now completely healed. I want to take the piercing out but am curious about the after effects, like scaring, permanent hole, etc.

I realize that after having a piercing for 6 years, the hole probably won't completely close. I also might have kids int eh future and have heard bad stories about people who have given birth having horrible scars.

My questions: The sooner you take your ring out PRIOR to getting pregnant, will the chances of scaring be less? More specifically, if I take my ring out now, and maybe get pregant in 6 years, do you think it will have a scar, stretch marks, etc? Is there anything to reduce the hole or scaring?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, your piercing is probably permanent, although the hole will shrink and you might have difficulty putting the jewelry back in. We could do it, and have recovered piercings where the jewelry had been removed many years prior to recovery.

Scarring usually happens only when the jewelry has been left in during the third trimester. If there are going to be stretch marks, I expect they will be more extensive than just around the navel. Many things have been proposed to reduce stretch marks, but your doctor would be able to give you better advice that I would.

There should be no problem leaving the jewelry in place until you are pregnant. We recommend that it be removed sometime prior to the six month point.
