I have just found out that i am pregnant (about 7 weeks) I have got VERY sore boobs nipples - it makes my eyes water just putting my bra on in the mornings. I have decided I want to take my nipple barbell out (I got it pierced November last year). I want to breastfeed etc and it hurts so much now without even thinking about a baby latching onto it!
My question is - how when should I take it out? As it is so sore at the moment, and its really really crusting (it never did stop crusting, but its been worse the last 3 weeks or so) so if I take it out now am I risking infection? I dont know what to do, and I dont want to hinder being able to breastfeed.
Thanks
Your hormones could be part of the problem with them being overly sensitive. We also believe that you may be still cleaning them which is why you have crusties and why you always did have them.
Overcleaning can make them very sensitive and irritated. If they are bothering you so much now, it is best that you remove the jewellery. They are healed and should not be a problem or risk of getting an infection. Since you have a barbell, just remove the balls and then remove the barbell. You do not have to do anything afterwards. Do not pay too much attention to them when you shower as this may make them hurt even more. Just let the warm water run over them.
By piercing the nipples, you have opened the milk ducts and should have an easier time breastfeeding than others who have not had them pierced.
Good luck with your pregnancy. May you have a healthy baby.
