New Lip Piercing - Wondering

Hey everyone,

I got my lip pierced about 5 days ago.  Fresh needles, totally clean, excellent piercing.  My question is about swelling, mostly.

My piercer said that my lips weren't very big and therefore he would give me a fairly moderately sized hoop.  This has been trouble however because of swelling (which I am well aware of) - the ring is too small for the swelling it seems, and instead of standing up straight as it should, it simply lies to the side and puts a great big indent on the lip.

This swelling doesn't seem to subside. I've taken Ibuprofen, Tylenols, etc. but nothing seems to work.  The only thing that I've found to reduce the swelling (albeit entirely temporarily) is with an ice cube on the lip.

Basically, I am just wondering if this problem is normal and also whether there is anything I can do to reduce the swelling while the piercing heals?  I'm concerned about a permanent indent on my lip from it?  I could just be being paranoid, but I'm really wondering about the general consensus.  I've been using brown listerine and mild antibacterial soap to clean it and it doesnt really seem to change anything.

Any additional information would be greatly appreciated.

You had an inexperienced piercer because he did not make any allowance for your body's response to the injury (piercing).

What is your aftercare?  How long are you to do the aftercare?

If you have taken some anti-inflamatory drugs and it has not helped, then our only solution is to return to the piercer and have him insert a larger ring to relieve the pressure.  This will NOT leave a permanent indent in your lip.  But the swelling will not dissipate if the ring is putting pressure on your lips.

If the ice seems to be working, then do it more often at least until the ring can be changed.

Keep in touch
