Hi All
I had my labret pierced yesterday. So far, I've minimal swelling; the bar was cut long to accomodate this... but, it's rubbing on my gums. Is this due to the lip swelling in response to the new piercing? It didn't rub for about 6 hours after, then when my lip started to swell, it began to rub. The disk is plastic, not metal, as I had concerns about gum erosion and my piercer said plastic minimises this. Will it stop rubbing when the swelling goes down and I get my bar changed for a smaller one in 2 weeks? I love my nice new labret, but I love my healthy teeth and gums more!!

I have this same problem with the backing rubbing on my gums and teeth. I just got mine 1 3. I also keep accidently biting it as it gets caught on my teeth.
I clean it like how my piercer said, to soak it with sea salt water solution and to rinse my mouth with the same type of solution after i eat or drink anything besides water.
Peak swelling is day 3 and then the swelling starts to dissipate. Please check out our aftercare and follow it for the best results.
Depending on the placement of the piercing, the rubbing may continue until you get in a shorter shaft with a flat back. This we generally do for our clients at about 4 weeks when the swelling is about gone.
Try not to play too much with the piercing and see how it feels at the 4 week mark. If after getting a shorter shaft your gums teeth are doing well, then great... if not, you may have to make a decision about removing the jewellery.

Salt water dries out the tissues and will cause you more discomfort in the long run. We have seen what salt water does to this piercing and you may develop problem inside and outside which will take several weeks to clear up.
Again, follow our aftercare.
