Navel Piercing Aftercare

Hi. I just got my upper navel pierced yesterday with a ring.
I was reading posts on this site before I got it done, and thought a ring would be the best option, then I can switch to a barbell once it heals.

Anyway, I was looking at the aftercare information that was provided on the site, and its a bit different from what my piercer recommended for me. The place I got it done says to wash my piercing 2 times a day with tea tree oil for 8 weeks.

I am a bit worried about over cleaning it and playing with it too much, seeing as it could cause for migration.

Do you think that if I followed the aftercare instructions on this site, and used tea tree oil instead of the liquid or glycerine-based soap, it would be okay? Or should I stick to the what my piercers aftercare instructions were?

Also, what is the best way to prevent migration of my piercing?

Thanks! ^.^

From what you stated about your aftercare, it is definitely too much and for too long.  The idea behind aftercare is to kick start the body to start healing the piercing.  Cleaning with tea tree oil is just too harsh and all we recommend is soap and water for only 2 weeks.

Please stop using the tea tree oil.  Your piercing is almost 2 weeks old, so please STOP cleaning altogether.

Over cleaning is the main cause of migration.  At this point, all you need to do is let water run over your piercing in the shower and afterwards, take a Q-tip and dry off the piercing around the holes.  We also recommend going inside the navel to get all the water so that it does not get trapped inside and stay wet as this will cause other problems.

Please keep in touch with your progress.

Thank you for your help.  :)

I stopped cleaning it a couple days ago.

How long should I wait before changing jewelry ?

You need to wait about 6 weeks before you can change it.  Just make sure that the piercing is healthy before doing that change.

Keep in touch.

I went to the place I got my piercing at and got them to put a barbell in because I was unable to initially change it by myself. Anyway, I noticed that if I run my finger across the skin where the space is in between the barbell, I can feel the barbell underneath my skin. However, I cannot see the barbell underneath my skin, I can just slightly feel it when I run my finger across that area.

Should I be worrying about weather or not migration has occurred?
