I was wondering if you could shed some light. I had my nape pierced in 2002. All went well, it healed and look perfect. About 18 months later, stupidly, I had my hair cut (not deliberately) to the same level at which my piercing sat. Within a month I had to take it out. I was gutted as I knew I had been lucky for my piercing to have done so well, for so long.
I left it for a year, but couldn't resist having another stab. So I went back and asked him if it was possible to go through the same points (as Im not keen on the scars) he said fine, no probs, so I went ahead. It seemed to take a little longer to heal but Im a strong believer in not over cleaning! and just letting things run their course.
The problem with the new piercing was it didnt seem to be as deep as the old one and it just felt so small and delicate. I thought I was going mad but it appeared to be shrinking and I became terrified it would just get caught on something and rip out! So I gave in and took the stupid thing out. THE THING IS I still miss not having it there. I loved it so much.
Do you think I would be able to go through the same points again but deeper, so the bar would be more curved, if that makes sense? or should I just accept that Ive had my fun and move on?
Is there anything you would recommend rubbing on it to break down scar tissue? Please Help me!
When we pierce the nape, we use a type of jewellery called a 'staple' barbell. It is uniquely designed so that the balls sit just nicely on the skin and do not become imbeded and cause problems.
You were lucky to have it last 18 months without problems and getting it done again in the same place should not have been a problem as the scar tissue would have provided extra protection from it migrating again. If the piercer did not place the piercing behind the first, resulting in a shallow piercing then it was the piercer who was unable to get a good grab of the skin.
You should look for a competent piercer who will be able to perform this piercing properly and deep. You still do not have any quarantee that it will last any longer than the first time but if you are careful and do not irritate it, you should have a healthy piercing.
You do NOT want to breakdown the scar tissue as this will help keep your piercing stable and last longer. Scar tissue is thicker and tougher and this piercing should be placed just behind the scar tissue.
