I had my tongue pierced nearly 4 weeks ago and I have now got a lump formed on the top of my tongue near where it has been pierced....any ideas what this can be? It isnt painful and the barbell has been changed to the shorter one?

This is why we like to see what we are giving advice on. I have many ideas what it might be, depending on the bump.

How near to the piercing? How big? What colour? Stiff or soft? Swelling or growth? How fast did it appear? Tell us about the bump and its development.

It is right next to the piercing, about 2mm in size, the same colour as my tongue, its fairly stiff and looks more like a growth than swelling. It appeared approx 21/2-3 weeks after I had my tongue pierced and it seems to have stayed the same size for a few days now.
Thanks for ur help and advice.

The lump is a keloid in its early stages. This is a natural response to mechanical injury in soft tissue. The tissue builds mass to better resist an irritation. There are a number of things we recommend to reduce this irritation:

  • Stop playing with the piercing!,
  • Get a fitted barbell. Eliminating the excess length reduces the leverage the bar has on the supporting tissues.
  • Have a 12g barbell. 14g or thinner bars apply more pressure to the supporting tissues. (Think about a cheese slicer. The thinner the wire, the better the slice.)
  • Stop playing with the piercing!
