i am hoping to get my lip pierced pretty soon.. but i was wondering if it can be pierced with a circular barbell instead of a captive ring, those things are just not fun. and i need to be able to change the ring easily for work. thanks for any help you can give me ;D

If you remove the jewellery because you are unable to wear it for work, you better get another piercing.  Or speak to your employer and ask for permission to get your lip pierced. The lip will quickly close up, especially if you try this after its about 6 weeks old.

The captive bead ring may not be fun, but its practical.  A balls on a circular barbell can become lose and fall off, then you have a good chance of losing the jewellery.  Its best to wait for the swelling to dissipate and then change it to different jewellery that is more 'fun'.

i understand that i cant change it right away, and id ask my piercer to change it out for me the first time... but captive beads in general scare me because i can never get them open and when i finally do... i cant get the ball back on. i messed up my cartlidge trying to put one in instead of my industrial bar, and i really dont like them.

The moderater is right that you should check with your boss first before getting pierced if it is going to present a problem.

You cannot be taking jewelry in and out while it is still healing!  You run a great risk of not only having it close while it is out for work, but also damaging the delicate newgrowth tissues from removal and reinsertion of jewelry.  Need I go on?  If you make your piercing angry it will swell even more and look less attractive, and since the lip is such a prominent spot, everyone will see your angry piercing and will be focus on your angry red swollen piercing and not on the beauty of the piercing itself.

If your boss says it's ok but wants you to wear something more low profile, maybe see about getting a retainer for after that 3 month healing phase.  Definitely discuss this with your boss if you think it might pose a problem.

The safest thing to do is don't get pierced if you can't wear the jewelry at all times while it is healing, including work.

Good advice for any facial piercing.  To pay for a piercing that you will have to remove is a waste of money.
