Do you ever use iodine sterilizing liquid on genital surface to surface ventures? If redness devleopes and the piercing ouzes do you have any suggestions. Dryness is not the problem down there but 'sweat' and other moisture can be a problem.

The iodine solution we apply is betadine , a providone iodine complex. We use it to kill any bacteria which might be present after the initial cleaning of the piercing site, prior to breaking the skin.

What few people realize is that the applied solution must dry in place to be effective. In the liquid form, the iodine is complexed and inactive. Once dried, the iodine is released as a vapour, and this kills the bacteria.

Because of the way it works, betadine is completely ineffective as an aftercare item.

Inflammation (redness) is a sign of irritation, and the oozing means that the inflammation is significant. Usually, but not always, oozing accompanies swelling and is probably associated with a mild infection.

Keep the area dry, and comfortable. Excessive perspiration should be rinsed off, to avoid salt buildup.
