Infection or are my ears just weird?

So I've had at least one lobe piercing since I was about 3 years old. A few years ago I decided to get another on a spur of the moment sort of fancy.

Well, 3-5 weeks ago I decided to get yet another lobe piercing from Claire's.

Having had piercings in my ears before, I have not been turning the new ones.  I originally used the solution that Claire's gave me but I switched to just using a spray solution called "H2Ocean".  I initially had some redness and soreness from the Claire's solution before switching to H2Ocean, but that cleared up only 2 days after using the new solution.

And things had been relatively fine until a few days ago. While the piercings themselves are fine, not red and not sore my right ear is having problems it would seem. I was trying to keep earrings in my other piercings just for vanity's sake but it would seem that was not the right thing to do.

The second piercing on my right ear has decided to play the role of a drain somewhat and seems to be leaking clear liquid. It's clear, not red and doesn't smell particularly one way or the other but it is disconcerting. It's kind of crusty around the second piercing and a tiny bit sore from where I tried to clean it up a little by removing the crusties.

I don't recall having this problem when I got my second piercing (but that could be because my first piercing is so old in comparison). The new piercings themselves seem to be doing just fine and have no qualms, it's just my 2nd piercing that's having the issue it would seem.

I was just curious if this was something that happened to other people as well or if I've done something wrong. It's very possible that I have done something wrong as I'm not the most attentive person to my ears but I'm definitely trying.

The weird thing about this is that it's NOT happening to my left ear. I sleep on my right side most of the time so maybe that's an issue? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

How long did you use the H2Ocean product?  It is a salt water spray and this is NOT a good product to use at all.  It dries out the tissues and if used too much will cause a problem like the one you are experiencing, the draining of fluid from the piercing.

So now you have one piercing acting up but you have confused us with which one is actually having the drainage problem.  Please clarify if possible.

We strongly recommend that you do not use the product anymore.  We also suggest changing the jewellery to implant grade surgical stainless steel (316L) to reduce any other problem.  Claire's jewellery is nickel plated and many people have some type of allergy and this could be another problem on top of the other.

We also recommend that you use warm water compress to help relieve the problem and get the body to start healing the piercings.

Ah yes, sorry for the confusion. The piercing having the problem is not the brand new piercing. It's my second piercing that is over 2 years old at least.  My new (third) piercings are having no problems at all, instead it is the second hole (on the right side) that is draining.

I have stopped using H2Ocean, and while my ear is less crusty now the second hole still has not stopped draining. It's not particularly painful unless one of the crusties gets pulled off (generally when I'm brushing my hair or changing shirts or upon the habit of scratching my ear). I am not allergic to nickel but I will search for a different earring to put in the hole that is draining.

My sister suggested to put neosporin antibiotic ointment on the hole that is draining (not the new piercing) but I'm hesitant to do so as I'm afraid it may affect the other piercings healing time. Any suggestions on that?

Thank you so much for you help so far! I appreciate it very much!

We do not know why the older piercing is giving you problems but stopping the H2Ocean in the area may help.

All we can suggest is to change the jewellery just in case you are having a reaction because this is what it seems to us.

Please DO NOT use neosporin polysporin ointment on this problem as it will do more damage than good to anything that it will touch.

Get in some new jewellery and just leave the piercings alone.  If you need to help get rid of the crusties, just use a warm water compress and leave on your ears for about 10 minutes.  Then take a Q-tip and remove the crusties (the water should have moistened them and they will come off without pain).  Then just leave them alone.
