i got my belly button pierced a week ago from tomorrow and the lady i went to said that it take up to a year and a half to heal.  Does this mean i can't change it until the year and a half is over?  in my head i thought to myself that was a really long time and when my friend asked they said that they change it earlier than that.  so i was wondering if that was true?

thanks for you help!

Yes, it does take a full year for any piercing to completely heal.  We heal by secondary intent and this is the longest type of healing that our body does.

We do change the jewellery after 6 weeks, because the body has started to form the granulation tissue inside the piercing and it is alright to change the jewellery if that is what the client would like to do.

When you first wrote to us, you were enquiring about the healing time of the piercing.  You did not tell us what you are doing to it.

If the piercing is still red, what is your aftercare and what products are you using?

It does not seem to be infected but irritated.  Could be how much you are cleaning or moving the jewellery.

Aftercare is only to kickstart the body, this is why we only clean for about 2 weeks.  Any more than that, you could be irritating the piercing and this is why its red.

If you are still cleaning, then please STOP and write to us so that we can help resolve the problem.

To help calm down the redness, you can do a warm water compress for about 10 minutes a day.

If you have any crusties, you can then take a Q-tip and remove them.

Otherwise, just leave it alone.  The body will do the healing.

Both types of jewellery are perfectly fine for you to wear; it depends on what type of style you like and the shape of your navel.

We pierce with a hoop and at 6 weeks, many of our clients insert a barbell.

Just make sure that the barbell is not too long for your piercing.
