I'm getting my sternum and my wrist pierced [when I have the funds] but I have a couple of questions.
I know surface piercings have a tendancy to grow out, but if the proper staple bars are used does that slow down the migration or stop it completely? I know the venue I intend to get pierced at uses them. I know it depends on the person, aftercare, irritation etc. but just generally.
Also, I was just wondering how the staple bars are inserted into the piercing. Just seems a little complicated because of the shape of the bar and like it could be fairly uncomfortable.
For the sternum piercing, you should have no problem if you have the piercing done with a staple barbell and flat disk head pieces. This will help reduce the problem of the weight from the balls putting pressure on the piercing. The weight from the balls, may be enough to start the migration process. Females should have this done vertically, males can have it either way.
With respect to the wrist, if you are getting this done on the inside part, then you may have migration even with a staple barbell. The tissues are more delicate underneath and will be rubbed more than the top part of the wrist. Again, flat disk head pieces may help reduce any pressure from the balls.
The insertion of the staple barbell is considered an uncomfortable part of the procedure. The bends are generally at 90 degree angles, and the piercer should pinch the tissues as much as possible to reduce the discomfort.
We cannot say if the staple barbell will 'stop' migration because each person is different and will react differently.
We also do not recommend cleaning any piercing done with a staple barbell as it will be extremely painful and only irritate the tissues which will encourage migration.
Just wash your body as you normally would, being careful around the piercing site.
Good luck
