ear lobe

I have 3 ear lobe piercings and the one closest to cartilage which i got pierced about 2 3 months ago with a gun.  Recently (1 2weeks ago) has started to hurt.
It now has big hard tissue surrounding it which is red and sore.

Yesterday i went to see someone about it and they gave me antibiotics. When talking to a piercer on the phone they said to clean it with savlon once i have had the antibiotics.

Today my ear has started to puss. Do you know if the red bump will go away if i keep applying the savlon spray?

I'd like to add, it has now been a week and I'm starting to stress that it may be forming into a keloid? There is a big hard bump on the center of my ear piercing however when i squeeze it, sometimes a yellow coloured liquid is expelled.  It just keeps getting hard and the skin is twice the size it was, in a dome style shape at the back.

I'm not applying any ointment to the piercing as i have read it will only irritate it. I have been taking the antibiotics but they dont seem to help. Could there be a keloid forming? Please help ASAP

We are sorry that you are experiencing such problems but this is part of the reason why we do NOT pierce with the gun.  As it punches out tissue, the problem so close to the cartilage is that it may have been more on the cartliage and this type of edge piercing causes many problems.

Part of the problem is the savlon spray, it is harsh and will only irritate the piercing.  A keloid takes several months before it completely forms.  At this stage, it is just a hypertrophic scar that is fluid filled.  This will be reabsorbed into the body as you leave the piercing alone and let the body heal itself.

The antibiotics may not do anything as you do not have an infection but an irritation.  We cannot tell you what to do with respect to the antibiotics, only a doctor can.

Thanks for the help.

I have left it alone and it seems to be doing ok.  However, I have a feeling it could be the jewellery
irritating it as I have sterling silver studs in.

Can you recommend me what to get to replace these?

thanks again

It really depends on what type of jewellery you want to wear.  The type that you can remove on your own gives you more control as to what to wear on a given day.

The type of jewellery that we use and recommend is captive bead rings or barbells that have balls to unscrew.  The material they are made from is Implant Grade Surgical Stainless Steel (316L).  It is very safe but something that you cannot change regularly, especially the captive bead rings.

Sterling silver does tarnish and can discolour your skin after time, and it could become permenant if the jewellery remains for extended periods of time.  So its great to wear once in a while but not for everyday wear.

Good luck
