I had my tongue pierced about 2 weeks ago. my aftercare was the undiluted original listerine, 2-3 times a day.

A few days ago, i looked on the bottom of my tongue and on the hole of my piercing, there's skin around the hole and it goes around in circle.. kind of hard to explain, but it has a rim-like thing of skin around my hole.

It doesn't hurt, there is no pus or anything, but there's still the white film on my hole. Just wondering if this is.. normal? Will this go away? Thanks.

one more question.. if the white film is still on the piercing, i would assume it's not fully healed right? thanks again.

From your description of your problem, what you are experiencing is normal.  There is a new lining being formed inside your tongue and this white stuff is part of the process.

Please leave it alone, it will stop very shortly.  But if you pick at it or bother it at all, then this will take longer and you will notice the white stuff for a few more days.

Any piercing takes a full year to fully heal.  The tongue is no different.  But we do recommend getting a fitted shaft after about 3-4 weeks as the swelling will have dissipated and you can cause damage to your gums and teeth.

We also recommend you switching to a mintier flavour mouthwash as the original listerine can cause you problems if continued longer than 10 days.

Keep in touch.

Yeah, I understand about the white stuff.

but on the hole of the piercing, there's a rim of skin that surrounds the hole... like a crater?

I don't know how else to describe it, but it's basically skin that's around the hole like a rim.

is this normal? thanks.

We have seen your problem before when done by another shop.  Generally we see this if the aftercare was either too mild or too strong.

Placement of the jewellery and the gauge was the other issue that affected some.  If you got a cold or were taking any medication, this could also affect the tissues.

Playing with the jewellery is also another factor.

As you can see there are many ways to create the problem you are experiencing.  See what you do and where your piercing sits and observe how your piercing reacts to what you do.

Then you can see what you do to cause this problem and you can stop doing it and your piercing should heal fine.  If part of the problem is placement and you were pierced with the 14 gauge barbell, our recommendation is to get a 12 gauge (its thicker) and this should stabilize the piercing.

Keep in touch
