What is 'Sterilized'?

I had a phone call today from a young lady inquiring about the price of a nostril piercing with a stud. She called back a few minutes later wanting to know how much it would be without the stud. ???

Blackstar:
"What about the jewelry?"
Caller:
"I would just find a stud I like and have you put it in."
Blackstar:
"Any jewelry you bring in would have to be sterilized before we use it in a fresh piercing."
Caller:
"What is 'sterilized'?"

and the conversation went downhill from there.

At Blackstar, every piece of jewelry we place in a fresh piercing has been pre-sterilized. We put it in its own little package, and cycle it through an autoclave before we offer it to the public. We offer a choice of beads for our captive bead rings. Every bead is in its own little pouch. Are these extraordinary measures? No. We have refused to do a piercing until we have a suitable piece of jewelry ready, usually involving an hour or two while we do a special sterilizer run. We will not compromise the health and safety of our clients.

By the same token, many pieces of jewelry we have seen from cheap boutiques would be damaged or destroyed by the heat and pressure of an autoclave. The jewelry we carry must be of top quality, and our clients usually appreciate the effort we make to ensure that nothing but the best is available here.

But no matter what we do, some will still have to ask "What is 'sterilized'?"
